Teaching space science to underprivileged kids through art
Space Through Art started after I met a seven-year-old girl at a farm stay who, without any formal schooling, intuitively explained the spring of a broken toy as "the spring just ate food and is fully energized to jump up and down!" That moment crystallised a mission: bridge the STEM gap for women and underprivileged kids in India by pairing science with art. I partnered with NGOs across Mumbai, Delhi, and Lucknow to teach space science using everyday materials — balls and cloth to model gravitational lensing and dark matter, splash painting and scratch art to teach planets and time dilation, and Oreos to teach moon phases. I scaled the project by training 10 student juniors from Mumbai schools to lead workshops, and raised ₹45,000 through a "Women in STEM" fundraiser to expand space education for girls in Delhi. The work merges my academic and artistic interests with a long-term goal: make curiosity in science feel accessible regardless of gender, financial background, or ethnicity.
